Emotional hurt is the price you pay for independence.
-Haruki Murakami, What I think About when I Think about Running
It could be seen as a depressing quote. One that is not at all aligned with positive psychology or an optimistic outlook on life. Actually acceptance is a key component when it comes to developing the ability to lead a happy and meaningful life. Optimism is not never seeing anything bad, it’s the expectation that despite the difficulties that are to be expected things will turn out alright. If you expect to be hurt in life you are not a pessimist. If you expect that your independence will come at a price but that you are prepared for that and are strong enough to pay that price, you are actually still an optimist.
