In school the sight of the red pen scribbles teaches us, that if we don’t get something right the first time we have failed. It’s an unhelpful thought, especially if we ever hope to do work that is truly challenging or create anything from art to a zoo. Every writer has to rewrite their first book draft multiple times. Comedians practice and refine their jokes dozens of times before they appear on national stage. Accepting that this is part of the process of creation is liberating. As the author Steven Pressfield says ‘birth is messy, full of blood and it always will be’. Only moving if you can get everything right is saying no to creation.
